Pietermaritzburg in South Africa has been hosting the UCI BMX World Championships, with local hero Sifiso Nhlapo and Colombian bike queen Mariana Pajon both in the medal reckoning.

Pietermaritzburg erupted to the sounds of the now-famous vuvuzela horns as local hero Nhlapo stepped onto the podium next to winner (and Olympic gold medallist) Maris Stromberg from Latvia. For Skizo, it was simply another step on his tough journey to glory. After finishing third in the 2008 World Championships, he was forced to watch the 2009 World Champs after he broke his neck in a horrific training crash… Silver is a step forward towards victory in 2011 and onwards to the London Olympics in 2012.

“It feels incredible, especially to do it in front of a home crowd,” said Nhlapo afterwards, “but I’ve got bigger fish to fry.”

He was, of course, referring to Olympic dreams in two years’ time, but this time Nhlapo spent all day chasing 2008 World and Olympic Champion Stromberg after the two were coincidently drawn together in the heats, quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Bbut only the most partisan South Africans would begrudge the Latvian his victory after he went throughout the day unbeaten.

Meanwhile, teen women’s BMX sensation Mariana Pajon shone at the World Championships after winning the top prize. It was Mariana’s sixth gold medal this year and the first time the young cyclist has achieved an international title in the ‘elite’ category, leaving behind her rivals at the competition with her courage and determination.

Winning the BMX championship in South Africa is yet another success for Mariana that brings closer her stated dream, like Sifiso Nhlapo’s, of winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

2010 has been a stellar year, with golds at the Panamerican Games, South American Games and Central & Caribbean Games before her latest triumph in the UCI Worlds.
